Michelle E. Brown was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. An artist/activist strongly
influenced by the socio-economic, political and human rights issues of the city and our times, she has used these challenges
as a backdrop for her essays, poetry, performance pieces and now her first children’s book.
Through her writing and activism, she has confronted the problems of affordable
housing, community development and HIV/AIDS housing in Detroit. She has worked with teen mothers, homeless
women with children and women recovering from the ravages of drug addiction. Advocating for youth empowerment, which is near
and dear to her heart, she has worked with several youth initiatives. In March 2008, she brought her talents to the
Southfield Public School system, reading her children's book at several elementary schools followed by writing workshops
for 4th and 5th graders.
Her essays and poetry have been published in several
Michigan newspapers and publications including the Detroit News, Michigan Citizen and Between the Lines. "Jack With The
Curly Tail" is her first published children's story. She is working on a second children’s book, as
well as an anthology of short stories and an unnamed mystery novel taking place in Maine’s Acadia
National Park and Detroit’s Cass Corridor. "Wild Fruit Hidden in Open Spaces" a collection of prose and poetry
is scheduled for publication in Summer 2008.
A single parent, she attributes her love of communication through public speaking and writing
to her family roots in preaching, education, acting and activism on both sides of her family. A champion of diversity
at every level, she finds inspiration in her daily interactions with everyday people from all walks of life.
